The invention of vaccines has saved millions of human lives and helped with the disappearance of certain diseases such as smallpox.
In this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccines hold the key for us to return to safety. However, doubts and fears create false information that may seem as fact. Here are three of the most common misconceptions about the coronavirus vaccines and the truth behind the
1. The vaccine was developed too quickly to be safe
While the vaccine was developed in record time, it was due to great need, and with global cooperation. Even if it only took a year to develop the vaccines, it is well documented that the COVID-19 vaccines went through all the appropriate clinical trials and is monitored by the CDC for safety and efficacy.
2. Vaccines can make you sick
Since vaccines do not contain a live virus, it cannot give you the disease it is protecting you from.
Some people can experience mild side effects such as soreness in the injection area, fatigue, or low-grade fevers, but these do not last for long. According to the World Health Organization, severe side effects rarely occur, so you're highly unlikely to be at risk.
3. You don't need the vaccine if you recovered from COVID-19
Research tells us otherwise. Those who've been infected by the virus and did not get vaccinated are more than twice as likely to be reinfected than those who got COVID before and were vaccinated.
Even if you receive a level of immunity after recovering from COVID, it isn't known how long this immunity will last.
